sojourner-truth from Allerton Grange
I was really surprised at how much I loved this book! It was so mysterious it had me glued to the page. It's great for curious people who like complicated and meaningful stories.
sojourner-truth gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
Charlotte from TEMPLE MOOR HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE COLLAGE
I didn’t enjoy this book, as it was a bit over the top. In some chapters, it was horrifying for me. I really think the book struggled to keep me interested. The plot was an array of mixed up scenes.
Charlotte gave Colony 2 out of 5.

Colony was a really good book that i really enjoyed reading. It was completely different to books I normally read but to me thats a good thing. At first it confused me slightly because it was set in two different times but as I kept going it became more clear to me what was going on and i felt that I couldn't put it down it was that good. I liked the fact that all the characters and times fit together to make a big picture. I also liked the fact that there was an island that doesnt really exist but the writer used his imagination to create a whole new place ! I liked the fact that each character gave bits of information so that I could understand it all. Its one of the best books i have read J.A.Henderson is a genious !! It was the type of book that i wouldn't normally read because it was about ants and I have never read a book about that topic !!
mohammed gave Colony 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.

This book was very very difficult to read , But it was alright to read , but the good thing about it was .....
it improved my vocab and English Lessons.
Christian gave Colony 4 out of 5.
Alicia from Benton Park
I persanolly didn't like the book as it was a bit out of the extreme. If it was a hole lot better i would put it as a winner but I didn't like one bit. In some parts it was horrorfying for me so I put it down then went back it to it the next day.
Alicia gave Colony 2 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
Neha from Pudsey Grangefield
This book was really confusing it was really hard to get into it. I found it really really boring. I stoped reading the book half way through.
Neha gave Colony 2 out of 5 and now plans to read Malice.
Carrie from Allerton Grange High School
A good theme with surprising plot twists and characters that you can get close to. However i feel that the front cover is a bit off putting.
Carrie gave Colony 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
Sophia from St. Mary's Menston
I didn't really like this book. There was too many characters and different time periods to understand. So i am giving it a 2
Sophia gave Colony 2 out of 5.

I really didnt like this book. I thought, looking at the cover, that i would enjoy this because i am quite like reading books about wars and fighting but obviously i was wrong. i thought it was so bad that i couldnt finish reading it because i really couldnt get into it at all. i couldnt understand and follow most of it because there were so many stories to get my head around that i just lost track and didnt understand and i just ended up putting it down so i could start a new book, anything could be an improvement. This really isnt my type of book and i wouldnt reccomend it after i read (some of) it. I am now really looking forward to getting this book out of the way and starting a new book. I have chosen 'life interupted'. The cover looks good and i really hope i enjoy it, at least more than colony!
Isobel gave Colony 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.
Frances from Pudsey Grangefield school
When I saw the cover and the blurb i thought it was going to be an boring army book but like the glittering eye and blood hunters there is different charectors and it all fits togeather eventually.
As I got further though the book I started to enjoy it more and couldn't put it down, I found it a very intresting enjoyable book and would recommend it. This is proberly one of my favriot books.
I liked all the charectors and felt kindof sorry for poppy at the end. I found it hard to put it down.
I usally don't enjoy books about the milatry but this was different and I enjoyed it very much, my favriot bits were when secrets started to come out and it all connected.
This is my 5th book and this is how i would rate them so far:
1. Colony ( Proberly so far but it is very close.)
2. Life, interupted ( I also really enjoyed this one and it is very close.)
3. blood hunters ( Amazing book.)
4. Malice ( Amazing awesome book, also very close.)
5. The glittering eye ( Good book but boring in places.)
Now i want to read running on the cracks.
I gave this a 5 but i would have given it higher if I could.
Frances gave Colony 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.

This book was realy boring and i couldnt keep track on the two parts os the story.
shannon gave Colony 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
Katie from Pudsey Grangefield School
I think that was the worst book that i have read. I couldn't get the hang of it. I only got to page 21 and my head was spinnig it was gthat confusing. Waht i didn't get was that there was one chapter on something and then it would go into a totally different part of the book. I ask why you did that because i didn't understand.
Katie gave Colony 2 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
Samantha from St mary's menston
It was a great book ever page is not what i expected. But near the end it got a bit confuseing with to time as in were they in the present or in the past? But i was very exciting i hope they make a second book!!
Samantha gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
Rachael from Pudsey Grangefield High
I found that Colony wasn't my type of book. I wasn't able to finish the book. I read most of it but I stopped at page 269.
Colony was extremely confusing and I found it really hard to read. Ants, the military and the different chapters are set in different time zones.
This book was also very technical. It was interesting at points but it was far too technical and confusing for me.
I also think that J.A. Henderson waited a bit too long before something exciting happened. I began to find it more interesting at around page 130 but I guess that the authour wanted to make sure we knew who and what most things were.
I couldn't understand the characters and most of the time. I wasn't really sure what was going on, even though the authour left clues in the chapters. The characters were strange and none of them really stood out, except for Apathy Amazon Walton. I think that she was the only character that intrigued me. I think that the best scene that I read was where Apathy was kidnapped and then she met her father.
Colony didn't capture my interest as much as the other books did but I'm sure that a lot of other people will like this book.
This book wasn't my type of read but I would recommend it to anyone who likes stories about the miitary AND ants.
Overall, 3 out of 5.
I gave it this rating mainly because it was EXTREMELY CONFUSING and I don't really like anyting about the military.
I have read all the books now. The books in order of favouritism are:
1. Blood Hunters or Malice
2. Blood Hunters or Malice (I haven't really decided on a favourite book yet)
3. Running On The Cracks
4. Life Interuppted
5. The Glittering Eye
6. Colony

Derry from Rodillian
I really got into this book and i really enjoyed it. I would like to rate it 5/5 but it was boring and confusing at the start but then the story unfolds and you understand. My favourite character is Gene because he is enthusiastic and brave. I also like Poppy because she remindes me of myself at diffrent places in the book.
Derry gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.
Abigail from Garforth Community College
This book didn't capture my interest as much as the others did. The plot is basic, three stories that links together. I didn't like the parts on kirkfallen island, because they were a bit boring. I didn't understand the ending, it was very hard to make out what the author was talking about.
Abigail gave Colony 1 out of 5.
sarah from temple moor high school
I loved this book as it was very interesting. I thought that the storyline was easy to follow as everything sort of explained itself. However I didn’t really like the parts in the past set on Kirkfallen Island as they were very boring.
sarah gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.
April from St. Mary's Menston
It was WELL good the story was sooo gripping and all the dying was really funny in a crude way!!! But the only thing is i couldn't follow the story somtimes and i got a bit mixed up!!! But its cool and i would definitely recommend it :)

kieran from dyca
Amazing full of action and suprise really good book to read. I especially liked that you didn't now what was going to happen, it was suprising and had alot of cliff-hangers. My favourite character was Gene, and my favourite part was when they fought the army.I also liked how at first you didn't have a good idea what was going on but as it progressed it started to make sense.
All in all great book:)
kieran gave Colony 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.
Liam from Temple Moor High school
I only read a part of colony because I could not get into it. In the first part which is the part that I read the book kept on flicking from place to place. This book was not my cup of tea but I thought that the cover was a lot different from the book. This book didn’t really catch from the beginning because I knew that I wouldn’t be fond of it.
Liam gave Colony 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Malice.
Abigail from Benton
This book was cool espesaly when it showed different times of the mans life .Personaly I didn't luke it much but i'm sure over people would love this book.

Rona from Allerton High School
This is such a page-turner! It has everything I want in a book, action and drama! It was a bit of a surprise as I didnt't expect the government to be involved in something so huge! My favourite character was D.B. Salty and Apatha Amazon and Gene came joint second! You think someone's a bad guy/girl then when they tell it from their view it then makes you think good guy/girl.
Rona gave Colony 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
jack from temple moor
I found colony a bit of a surprise I wasn’t expecting it to be about government plots and schemes. The book was a clever combination of factual information and fantasy with little snaps of famous people’s speeches for example Adolf Hitler, Albert Einstein and scientific facts like it is estimated that there are approximately 6,600,000,000 humans on earth and 100,000,000,000,000,000 ants .I did find the way the book was laid out a bit confusing and that the ending was a bit unsatisfactory.
jack gave Colony 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Malice.
Laura from Rodillian
I enjoyed Colony I'll have to read it agian
Laura gave Colony 4 out of 5.

Shaniece from Allerton Grange High School
I really liked this book! i loved the way that the author wove the backstories through, and the way the storyline pulled the tention tightly! D.B. Salty was by far my favorite character, but Gene and Apathy came in a close second! the story line was fab, and i ,oved the way it dropped into Fallen (no pun intended) halfway through! i loved this book, and was a close second to Malice, my favorite from this read-and-review scheme
Shaniece gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
Jasmine from Boston Spa School
Wow! Colony was amazing I loved just about everything about it. There are multiple characters in Colony but all play a big part in the bigger picture. Each of these characters gives you scraps of information from varying times and places. The plot is cleverly entwined to create drama and you desperately want to read on because you are immediately hooked. The link between past and present gives the book depth and you get to understand the background information a lot better than most books. Although at the beginning it is a little confusing and quite hard to seize you are still wanting to read it because it is fast paced and there is lots of action making it unputdownable. The plot of the book is an unusual take on such an original idea. As you read through the book you start to make links between characters and events, and start to guess the ending but it is unlikely that you will get everything right. There are mysteries left till the end so you don’t feel like you know it all. There are no main characters as such they are all interpreted as though they all have a major role in the history of the story. The best thing about this book is indeed how you try to do the detective work this makes a good strong link with the reader making it even more captivating. But you do have to be on the ball because it is a hard story to grasp all at once don’t worry if you don’t quite understand bits because you will gradually understand it by the end. This makes the book even more satisfying to read. Story’s shouldn’t be plain and simple you should have to think about them and with this you do. However you can’t keep leaving the book because over wise it is hard to remember who is who and how they fit in to the whole thing, but because it’s so good, you won’t.....unless you’re eating of course. You get completely sucked in and want to know more and more about this amazing adventure. JA Henderson has pulled this book off really well, it could have turned out quite badly because of the complexity and structure of the book but it does work as long as you stick with it. Your be drawn into a world of ants, freak killings sprees (it’s not as gruesome as it seems, it doesn’t focus as much on the killing side but the reason behind it)and children on an island that could one day change the world for better or for worse. I’ll let you guess. This is truly an amazing read and you have to give it a try I can guarantee you’ll like it if you want an adventure. It really worked for me.Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Jasmine gave Colony 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.
Gheorghe from Boston Spa School
It thought it was good - the way it exploited several seemingly unrelated storylines and plots throughout the book, before combining them at the end was a really god way to get someone in a book. But, in my honest opinion, I did expect more. But still, it deserves it's place in the shortlist.
Gheorghe gave Colony 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.
Mary from Roundhay School Technology an language College
I'm really sorry to say that, but it's the truth: I didn't really like the book. I read the blurb and a few chapters - that was enough for me to realise I didn't like "Colony". The blurb was particulary terrible, I mean ANTS (???), but it did get me interested in the book. It's not what I'd normally read, I was trying to broaden my horizons, which obviously failed. Still, I did like the cover...
Mary gave Colony 1 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.
George from Temple Moor High School
I thought that COLONY was an excellent book, fun and exciting, one of those that you never seem to want to put down. The characters were well thought out, and played their part in the plot really well. The fact of using ants was also interesting, and I enjoyed reading it.
George gave Colony 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
sally from Boston Spa
colony is amazing,I loved it. Its so jam packed that you will never want to put it down. Its about and experiment with pheramones that goes wrong. Its exitement and tension all the way through. It is written brilliantly, all seperate stories that tie together with so much detailand through that draws you in and makes you want to find out how these strange things are happening.
sally gave Colony 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.
abigail from boston spa school
i liked colony because it was a good book to read i also liked it because it had a good story board and it did not give anything away until the end and i was a bit shocked at the end and i could proberly read it again and still be shocked by the ending. I gave it a 4 out of 5 as i thought it was a great book with a good story line
abigail gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.
Laura from Boston Spa School
I really liked colony. Unlike some other people, I found that I could understand all of the sub-plots as they went on, and did not mind the time-changes. It really develops the ethical issue raised, but also at moments made me laugh or be sad. A real all-rounder of a book, and I would recommend it to anyone who can handle multiple sub-plots and has an interest in future science. Otherwise, you should still read it anyway!
Laura gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.
michelle from allerton high school
it was brilliant. how everything was linked at the end, it was the perfect way to finish the book

it was a bit confusing, and a bit hard to get ihnto at first but as the story continues it all comes clear. it is not one of my fauvourite books as it was mostly about wars.

L.A. from The Lincoln School
Even though I'm older than your typical reader, I found Colony a fascinating page-turner! I was drawn into the story immediately, flipping back and forth as the details started falling into place- I think I finished in less than 4 days.
As a teacher, I will definitely recommend Colony to young readers, and to our school library! The social and ethical issues raised would make great conversation-starters for students in any age group.
L.A. gave Colony 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.
Chloe from rodillian

I really enjoyed reading this book because It was good how all the differnt plots gradually joined together and things you dont understand become clear as you get further into the book.
I recommend this to all readers !!

Izzy from boson spa school
I licked this book alot as i found it interesting and liked the way the plots wove together as I got further through the book. However, i gave it 4 out of 5 as i found it hard to get into and a few aspects of the book a little confusing. Over all though, it was a good and i would recomened it to friends.
Izzy gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.
Jessica from benton
I foumd this book quite hard to under stamd because there are lots of different dates and places and new names keep appering. Other then that though "Colomy" is a page turning book full of suspence, If you were waching the film of it you would be sitting on the edge of your seets eger to see what was going to happern next. I wouldn't recogmend it to people who don't like gory or sad books otherwise it is a realy good reed.
Jessica gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.
Belinda from Benton Park
This book is very entertaining but it can get a bit confusing as to when and where the storie teller is. I like this because you have to think about the book more. I found the ending a bit confusing though.
Belinda gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.
James from Allerton High School
This was a brillant book full of twists and turns. The way the author kept you intrested was flipping from times. I liked the idea of the ant Alarm Gene which caused people to fight.
Overall it was a good book a 5.
James gave Colony 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Malice.
Azhar from Allerton Grange High School
The mystery and unanswered questions in Colony encourage you to keep reading, the story became more and more clear as you kept reading. It was an action-packed book and the structure of the book was good, I liked how it switched between past and present. I would recomend this book to a friend.
Azhar gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
Hannah from Boston Spa School
I think Colony is a good book because it is full of secrets and you don't find out what actually happens until the end. I loved it!
Hannah gave Colony 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.
Anna from Boston Spa School
I think that Colony is a good and bad book.
Its bad because the story jumps around a lot and its confusing and hard to get into which makes me like it less.
But it has good points like the fact that it is very descriptive and has lots of different tenses and settings.
Overall I think its an ok book but it could be improved a lot and it should stay in the same tense and lifestory.
Anna gave Colony 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.
Ellen from Boston spa
I think colony was a good book. I would recomend it to a friend but parts of it were very confusing and hard to follow.
Ellen gave Colony 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.
Grace from Benton Park Technology College
Colony is a complicated book, as it jumps from past to present and back again. I think it really stood out because of the blurb and because it jumps straight into action. It really encourages you to keep reading, because straight away there are several mysteries which don't get solved until later on. I think the best scene was when Apathy Amazon found out that her dad (that she had never met)was a wanted man. I think that Poppy dying spoiled it a bit, as she was a very good character. The final battle against the US government was very good, a nice idea. This book was very exciting, and it kept me interested all the way through. I wouldn't recomend it to people who don't like sad or gory books, but for anyone else it is a really good read. It's a real page-turner.
Grace gave Colony 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Malice.
Darren from Boston Spa School
Colony stands out as a complicated, well though out but not overly exciting novel. No character has a strong enough personality to sustain the book, although Apathy Amazon Walton is very intriguing. I think the main flaw in this novel is the plot. It jumps throughout various years and does not give enough understanding to establish a major impact from the character's emotions. I disliked a good proportion of this novel concerning the end, although it was nice to have the US Government as an enemy, the plot never becomes belivable. The sub-plots are scattered wildly and make no sense whatsoever until you make the connections. The main plots are the Kirkfallen Island plot, the Apathy / her Father plot and the US Government plot, so I'll talk about them seperately. The Kirkfallen Island is rather lame and never builds up enough pace to sustain itself. The plot seems inconceivable and becomes monotamus as they continue along a line that takes too long to reach a nice ending. The apathy plot was the best, very realistic and nicely set out, with various flashbacks given a nice, mysterious effect to the book. It does become tedious, however when she goes to Kirkfallen Island. The whole US plot was nice and would have suited it better if it had been more significent importance earlier on. It was nice to have a US enemy but the whole physipathic and experiments were not really interesting yet it played well in the main context. I didn't like the Aberdeen family as they were never really explained and made no sense and left myself wondering for about 200 pages what it was about. The final scene was too violent for my liking as not a single character made real sacrifices or emotion to make me like it, although 1 point goes to Poppy's death which was quite good, it should have been another character who would have given it more feeling.
Best Character: Apathy
Character(s)that need Improvement: The US enemy and the people on Kirkfallen Island.
Best Scene: Apathy meeting her father.
Scene(s) that need Improvement: The end and the beginning
Plot Rating: 3
Character Rating: 1
Emotional Rating: 2
Overall Rating: 2

when i first looked at this book and the blurb it sounded a bit wierd and not really my sort of book but the first couple of pages inspired me to read on it may sound strange at first but this book is a really action packed book with a great storyplot i would definatly recomend this book to most people they made the right choice by putting it in the 11-14 section because i think younger people may get bored and this may not be their cup of tea to many older people but all round this is a great book
