I really enjoyed this book, because it can suit people who like all different things. For instance, I usually prefer fantasy, or thing set in medievil times. However, I did like this book and would recoment it to everyone.

Chloe gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.

Malice is a book most people will probably judge by its cover but the book happens to be a really creative book, which is by far the most imaginative. This book could be for anyone at any age, any gender.
Malice is very detailed as well; people get attracted to it and don’t want to get rid of it. Tall Jake is a demon type creature that exists in a haunted comic book that most people stay away from. In the book People are getting a little stop by from Jake and that wouldn’t have happened if they didn’t do the ritual. Tall Jake take me away, Tall Jake take me away!

Liam gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.

Charlotte from Temple Moor High School Science Collage

I really enjoyed this book. I liked how it changed from ordinary text, to pages from a comic at first I didn’t like this idea however it is really effective. I would love to know how Chris Wooding came up with the idea ‘time sucking critters!’

Malice suggests a success with it's unique hybrid text, it has many positive points in its way of writing. For example it lay out of text is effective for it uses visual effects to emphasize what he has writing. Another example of a positive point is the obvious knowledge of the human mind which helps greatly in writing a story in making it more realistic an of course the more obvious reason that the author will be able to appeal to the mind of the reader. Another positive point is that even when you have the feeling that it should end and you would find it disappointing but predictable if it does it goes on for another 150 pages. So overall i find that i would give it a 6/5 because it appealed to me and i am sure it will appeal to people my age.

Natasha from Boston spa high school

This book is not the best book i have ever read but it was good. The cover slightly put me off reading it but when i did read it I found it good how it got straight into it! I liked the fact that it was a whole new world and I liked the mystery of it. The bad part was that i thought that it was quite hard to keep on reading it was not a big book it just bored me a little bit at the end. I also didnt like it because it was a scary sort of book and i dont really like that type of book. I think the authur was very creative with his ideas !

Natasha gave Malice 3 out of 5.

Fantastic story with an ingenious theme and clever comic strips. A really Great read any time. The characters and plot twists are great! I can't wait for the next book! :)

I really enjoied this book because it was packed full of action and excitment, and you didnt know what was around the corner. I liked the mystery and suspence about tj (tall jake) and the queen of cats.

Derry gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.

Katie from Pudsey grangefield school

i thought malice was great the best part was when Seth, Justin and Kady where all in malice and were all fightnig for there life. I also thought that you could have chance the chant to tall jake take me away istead of tall jake take me away.

Katie gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Laura from Prince Henry's Grammar School

I really, really enjoyed reading this mezmorising book. I wasn't too sure about it at first because the cover looks quite 'manly,' however I couldn't have been more wrong. I definatley recomend this book as it's scary, intresting and gripping!

Laura gave Malice 5 out of 5.

Isobel from Boston Spa School

I didn't enjoy this book at all as i am not interested in manga so the comic book parts were no revival for the boring parts in the middle. The actual reading of the book was just boring and to get through this book was a struggle. Also, I found the 3d cover very tedious as it stook out and made it difficult to fit in a packed school bag.

Isobel gave Malice 1 out of 5.

Rebecca from Woodkirk High

This book had many secrets my favourite was when Kady finally realised that she had been to Malice before but had been hypnotised to think that she had been to visit her friend in San Fransisco. When she realises that she is stuck in the middle of a fight between a comic book and the real world.

Rebecca gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Colony.

Jasmine from Boston Spa School

Strangely I actually liked this book.Im quite into manga but thats about it so I don't really read many comic style books however, this I enjoyed. I liked the weird plot for some reason, it was imaginative and something completely different. The characters were quite believable and played a big part in the overall story.I liked the mix between comic and story and I can see why other people enjoyed it too.I liked the progression through the book but thought it was basic.Malice was a good idea but could maybe be described a bit more in depth and the characters could maybe have explored the area more. The word Malice is quite miss leading in a few senses because its not a scary or horrible book however it does have a few darker parts in it that may scare younger kids. The front cover has been talked about quite alot because of its 3D picture im not really sure I like this though.I liked the unexpected twist at the end and it really flipped the story over.Overall I liked the mystery and concept of Malice and its certainly a great book for younger readers. However I think it has a long way to go to be one of the best in the short list.

Jasmine gave Malice 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.

Malice is a comic book land where you have to call on tall Jake to take you there. you have to do a special spell using weird ingrediants. Seth and Kady think it is all fake, until one of their friends dissapear. Seth is suspicious, so he calls on tall Jake... A very good book for people who like comics, i could understand it better with half of it comic. It was really good for action, because it would have a ending to the writing where nothing happened. Then boom, the comic starts and the action begins, which is good, because most action is in comic books like marvel.

Abigail gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Abbie from Pudsey Grangefield High School

I quite liked this book. I loved the idea of having comics in it but i thought it got a little bit boring at times. It was quite scary aswell! I would recommend this book for boys because it's scary and gave me shivers down my spine. I think that the author could maybe put a few funny bits in so that it's not as boring but I did enjoy reading this book at times. Overall I'm glad I read this book!

Darren from Boston Spa School

Malice, a strange name for a book, butI gave it a try. Now that I've read it, I don't think it's very good. The best part of this book is the cover because it's 3D, but that's not what I'm supposed to reviewing so the book goes down from 4 to 1 for simple reasons, 1 - The plot gets boring after a while, 2 - All the characters are like cardboard, 3 - I don't understand the comic parts and 4 - Malice (the place) was used only to kill a bunch of kids. But before I moan about them, I'll talk about the good sides. The positives are characters that actually have parents, unlike a lot of books. Another positive is the part set in the real world, it was much more interesting and gives me a nice feeling of suspense of mystery that just isn't followed up at all, instead that part of the plot sort of withers out of the story which was a shame. Now for the amazing part of the book, the hypnosis sub plot, it was ingenius and when it was revealed I smiled because it actually gives this book something that saved it and the final ending was superb and would make me love this book but unfortuately, the hypnosis plot takes up about 40 pages of a 350 page book so it isn't really involved enough, if it had a larger role it might have ruined the book but I just found it too coincedental that Kady can find Seth and happens to be able to hypnotise him. (Oops, I've just spoilt the ending, oh well). So, this would make me really like the book but it doesn't because of the things I mentioned earlier. The whole idea of a world that these kids get stuck is not really new but all Seth and Justin do is walk around killing creatures and exploring and talk about things that are boring, so I got bored not long after the Malice plot entered the scene. When they were walking through that dark cavern, I noticed how little actually happened, it just dragged on. The characters are bland and have no real drive behind them, Seth is not amazing, just an ordinary person which makes a change but the auther attempts to make him unique and special which makes his character the most un-interesting in the story. Kady is different but boring, her parents are a bit strange so she isn't particularly normal and although this can be explained by memory loss, it totally fails to make an impression on me. Luke and Heather are the same, boring and never given a chance to shine but that doesn't really effect my view of the characters. Justin is strange, he's by far the best character but his background is just predictable and even though he appears to be a good character, his personality reflects differently. Colm makes no sense and serves as someone twisted by Malice and only makes me wonder why Seth and Justin want to help him. Tatayana is dead quickly but why she is resurrected is a bit rubbish because she's only there as white noise, there but not doing anything. The whole scene with her in the big fight is really uninteresting. Tall Jake is just a killer and his character doesn't expand, the characters who help him seem quite interesting but they don't have much to do. I know I'm syaing the characters just don't expand but as this is a set of books, hopefully each character which stretch out from their limited roles but I won't be reading the other books to find out. The comics are fine to get kids to read them but they sort of jump around and I imagine the characters as I read them but them the comic establishes their appearance and it means how I imagined they looked is often completely different which annoys me even more. Malice isn't interesting, it serves only as a book to gets people to read it because it contains comics but it is all about killing kids and that's all it'll ever be to me. So, compelling ending, great ideas but mostly boring.

i thought the ending was good because you can tell that the might be another book out about malice and it is a clif hanger in thee book so that leaves suspence in the story but the thing i like was how it made you involed with the book

Georgie gave Malice 4 out of 5.

Frances from Pudsey Grangefield school

I loved this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was really good. The mix beetween the comics and the story makes it more intresting to read and as it leaves you on a clifthanger. I am so desperate to read havoc. I can't piock a favriot book so far but i would defenatly recomened this one!!!!!!!

My other reveiw on the book MALICE is a very good because i have now read 6 chapters and I think that it is a really good one because i like the comics and the good use of vocabulary and i like the wide use of long and short sentences i can't wait to read on and find out what happenes

jake gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Georgina from Temple Moor High School

This book is very good, and is very suspenseful the entire way through. It is very creative to switch from novel to comic, and is very easy to read and it is very simple to understand the character's feelings. I will emphasise the fact that the comic is very well-drawn, and is very much like a real one.

A very-well thought out book which I think shouldn't be judged by the cover. It is amazing.

Georgina gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.

Safura from Pudsey Grangefield

I liked it alot and I liked the idea of having comics in it..... but I think it could be improved by having less chapters in it!

Safura gave Malice 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.

Cody from Primrose High School

This is yet the best book I have read in the book awards 11 - 14 catagory! I can't wait to read Havoc. I believe this should win the awards as I could read this over and over. I felt like I was in the shoes of Kady and Heather. I felt like I had just been sucked into the world of Malice. I got terrified when I heard the noise down stairs. I think the author did a perfect job while writing the book and I think he created a scene of what most kids fear inside!

Cody gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.

kitty from grangfield high

i like this book a lot , i also liked the idea of having a bit of comics in it . to improve i think the author should put some funny bits in it .

kitty gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Jack from temple moor

I loved this book it had a brilliant concept and the way it was flicking from comic to book was great it showed that the author was a very creative man also I found it made it feel shorter. An easy read with plenty of adventure and creativity it also had a sinister dark side to it. My favorite character is Seth as he is very adventurous, intelligent and sometimes is a bit too courageous I also get his point about living with no danger and with almost all of earth explored.Over all a great book and I'm pleased to give it 5/5.
best so far, looking forward to the next book havoc. ☺

Jack gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.

Azhar from Allerton Grange High School

The best so far! I loved the comic that mixed with the story. Also there were loads of twists and cliffhangers that made you want to read on. I am definitly reading the second book and I'll bet in a few years they'll probably make it into a film.

Azhar gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.

Emily from Temple Moor High School

I have really enjoyed reading Malice, it has a very interesting plot and the characters are realistic. I liked the comic book style pictures and how the stories left you on a cliff hanger! The language is easy to understand. This book was a real page turner, you always wanted more! Over all I really enjoyed reading this book! Malice You can’t ESCAPE!

Emily gave Malice 5 out of 5.

Mark from Primrose High School

Malice is the best book I have read so far this year with Tall Jake & his enemies of the world of malice it is very interesting with its combination from average story mixed in with scenes from the adventures of the comic in malice & its artist Grendal whom I believe to be a very elusive character in the story. Kady is also very interesting for her adventures & saving the day for Seth & Justin. Overall I could talk on & on for this is a good book to read & would keep the most imaginative of us very busy with it wild story trail & plot, overall this is a very very good book & I would advice anyone to read it who looks for an adventurous book.

Mark gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Malice is the best book i have read. Its genius that this book is part novel and part comic. My fave chachecter is kade.she's really adventures and i think she's cool.I recommed this book to anyone that reads as its a great book to get into.

Raeesah gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Sana from Boston Spa

I really enjoyed this book, it is the best book from the 11-14 shortlist!! My favourite character is kade, the reason for this is because i can put myself into her boots and really imagine how shed be felling when she is trapped in malice especailly! i LOVED the way the story is not just one jaunra all the way through. It goes from diologue to action and then comic strip. i really liked this idea. It really builds up suspence, and you just keep wanting to read on. i would recomend this to all readers that cant get into books easily, because this is very easy to get in to!

Sana gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.

jake from david young community academy

My review on the book MALICE is that it is a very exciting book.It is about a man out of a comic called Tall Jake he takes you to a place called Malice a place where kids never leave. It is like a kid type of horror and it is a very interesting book and I have read a couple of chapters and so far it is very good and I can't wait to read on and the dilema is good. Also I think think the story line is good because it is type of book I am into and I can't wait to read on and see what happens.

christopher from benton park

a good book but not the best.im not really into scary sort of books but this one was all right it had great tention from the start and i loved to read it but since its not my favorite genre i couldnt reeally get into the spooky happens but all round it is a very good book

christopher gave Malice 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

sam from roundhay high

Malice was a tremendous acheivement the comic part could have gone horribly wrong but chris managed to keep it alive with a storyline that is breathtaking I loved the random way it changed from book to comic and thought the characters were very well thought out.

sam gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.

Ruben from Roundhay

A mixture between comic and book. This is a book that will never leave your hand. There's a place kids never leave and that world has malice in.Two children think the other world is just a myth.Their friends start diserpearing. This book is a well written action packed adventure and if you like comics and books this is a book you want to read. The cover has a 3d affect which will leave you shocked.A unmissable book to read!

Ruben gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.

Roddy from Roundhay

I think Malice is a really good book - it's got a good plot, great characters and a brilliant cover. The only bad thing about it is the fact it's a bit confusing at the start, and there isn't a sequel!

Roddy gave Malice 4 out of 5.

Adam from Roundhay high

It's just brilliant I just couldn't believe it. I have never read a book like it

Adam gave Malice 5 out of 5.

Rachael from Pudsey Grangefield

This book was amazing. The comics were cool and the storyline is very different to most things that I have read.It has an interesting plot and a bit of a cliffhanger at the end. There is a lot of adventure in it. When I first picked it up, I wasn't sure what to think of it because it didn't look like my kind of book, but after I started reading it, I didn't want to put it down. I also loved the 3D cover. This book is great and I would recommend it to just about anyone. I really enjoyed reading this and I feel almost desperate to read Havoc. it's that addicting!! :)

Rachael gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.

Sarah from Temple Moor High School and Science College

Malice is a good book, it has an interesting plot and realistic characters. The front cover was cool as well and the story itself was hard not to like. The graphic novel parts are also very good because they enforce the picture the descriptions make. I love this book, it is just the kind I like. The way the chapters follow on from each other very well. And it is cool that its all seperate stories joined into one. With the parts set in Malice it can get a bit confusing as some of the names are odd.I prefer books like this to other kinds of books.

Sarah gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Stephen from Temple Moor

This book is very good. when I looked at the cover I thought it might be a bit babyish but it was fantastic - a great plot with new twists every chapter. It definitely wasn't babyish and I was very impressed.Seth was my favourite character because he was already involved in the action and he always managed to defeat anything that got in his way.I was extremely impressed with this book it left you on an epic cliffhanger.I can't wait for Havoc. I have an urge to find out what happens to Seth. When's Havoc coming out ?

Stephen gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.

Ellen from Boston Spa

I thought malice was a really good book. I like the way most of the chapters follow on from each other. I prefered the parts of the book which were in the real world(not malice) because it was more realistic and easier to understand as some of the names of the creatures in malice were very hard to understand. This was also really good because the names are really imaginative ,like nothing i've ever heard of before, like Malice so it reaaly gets you into the mood of the book. I like the idea of having the characters(Seth and sort of Luke) trapped in the book and then the hudge twist at the end where Kady has escaped from Malice was really good and completely unexpected. I definatly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read Havoc!!!!!!!!!!!

Ellen gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Glittering Eye.

Amy from Benton Park

I think Malice is a great book because it is spine tingling & grabs your attention straight away. People who get scared quite easily will not like this book as many others. I think that Malice is very good and recommend it for lots of others that like mysterys.

Amy gave Malice 3 out of 5.

Langa from City of Leeds School

Absolutely loved it. It's genius - a book and a comic!
I liked the mysteriousness of the storyline as well as the structure.

Langa gave Malice 5 out of 5.

chloe from Allerton high school

I would have gave it a five but I can't because i have to find out the ending in the next series.I could not put it down and i loved the way they were different stories but linked in together and exellent use of tention.i would reccomend this book for 11 years upwards.

chloe gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Katie from Allerton High

I thought it was good but not as good as i thought it would of been.

Katie gave Malice 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Chaand from Allerton High School

i thought the book was quite good because it was about the rumors and i quite liked that part and i also thought about how the writer had set it out a bit like a story and a bit like a magazine!

Chaand gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Bjorn from Pudsey Grangefield High

I personally loved Malice It looks really scary but it's not really. It is a book about 3 teenagers Seth, Justin and Kady who get plunged into the nightmare comic land of malice, whilst their they morph into cartoon versions of themselves especially in the graphic sections. I loved it because the mixing of book and comic was BRILLIANT I loved it !!!

Bjorn gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.

Shaniece from Allerton Grange High School

This book was amazing! I loved it! It was tottally perfect, because i love horror/action/thriller/adventure stories (e.g. the Skulduggery Pleasant books by Derek Landy-I can't wait for the release of Dark Days!) , and graphic novels(e.g. manga) and since this was half comic half novel it was perfect! I liked the way it suddenly changed from text to comic to text again, and the plot was brilliant! I found myself wanting to say the omnious incantation, "Tall Jake, Take Me Away" and travel to the city of Malice myself, it was that real! After reading the book (which i finished in about two and a half hours), I went straight to Chris Wooding's website and tried to find out the release date of Havoc, the sequal to Malice. I wish to purchase this book myself, and hopefully Havoc when it comes out too! I loved this book, and hope very much that it wins an award, as it the best book of the ones I've read so far!

Shaniece gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Jessica from benton

This book is a OK horror\adventure stile.Malice is scary in parts and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't like being scared. It is OK but I have read better books before. Also even though it is the same thikness as most book it seemed to take longer to reed than normal.

Jessica gave Malice 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.

Laura from Boston Spa School

I loved it! I didn't think that putting the comic and novel together would work, but somehow it did. It was a really creative idea, and drew me in straight away. That said, if you don't know about 'chat speak', then some parts of the book might confuse you. Might. But if you are from the modern generation at all, using text or online chat, then you should definitely read this. I just hope the rest of the category are this good!

Laura gave Malice 5 out of 5.

Belinda from Benton Park

This book is a great adventure/horror storie. I loved the idea of a comic stealing children and them having to find a way to survive in the comic. The addition of the comic parts is extremely unusual, and adds an extra-special bit of interest to the book.

Belinda gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Running on the Cracks.

James from Allerton High School

This had lots of twists and turns. It was full of mystery and strange things. this was good because it was scary and exciting. Inside Malice where everywhere had something bad. the good thing was that it turned out that Kady went that once and went back prepared. I can't wait for the next one which continues the story!
It is a must read so i gave it a 4.

James gave Malice 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Life, Interrupted.

Abigail from Boston Spa

It was brilliant as it was so full of excitment and adventure. If you want a good scary read this is your book as it takes on a tale about the magazine called Malice and the things that happen to you when you say the enchantment Tall Jake Take Me Away. You read about all of these weird and unusal animals. I would recommend this book as it is a good book with a twist as it has some comics in it to make it interesting

Absulutely brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It looks really evil and cunning but it's not really. It's about two friends who
get hold of a copy of the comic 'malice' after there friends go missing. When Seth says the chant and goes missing, it's up to Kady to save him.

Malice is terrifying and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't like being scared. It leaves you itching to call on Tall Jake to take you to Malice yourself. I really like the parts that are drawn in the comic book style. Once you start reading you just can't stop. You really start to belive in Malice. I like the idea of tickets to get away from Malice, and the fact that when people die you can use the power crystals left behind to start up clockwork animals, such as the sabore-tooth tiger. It leaves you on a cliff hanger at the end. I cant wait to read Havoc, the next book in the series!

Grace gave Malice 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Hunters.

Anna from Boston Spa School

I think Malice is a good book because its very descriptive and exciting because it stays interesting throughout the book and I never lost interest. Its also has a great storyline because though its just about normal in the beginning, it misleads you and Malice ends up in a comic land.
But Malice also has some bad points, I personally don't really like the comic parts because they are confusing and hard to understand! Also, when you start the book you really want to finish and find out who survives and what becomes of Malice, but when you finish it just stops mid-story and it seems as if the writer hurried to finish the ending.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading Malice and I can see why it was chosen for the awards. I can't wait to see what Havoc is like!
