I really liked this book.It was easy to get into and the plot as a whole was very realistic. The characters you formed a good relationship with and they were very believable. The idea of what the book is based on really got me hooked because it interested me as I had not read much on the topic before. At some points it was a bit predictable, however the description within the story really made it exciting to read.It shows what people are willing to do to get what they believe in, however, it sometimes comes at a cost. This is a great book to read and I would recommend it to my friends.

I throught that this book was a hard book to read as it had a difficult story line and it was written well but it had some difficult langage and it was quite thick so it was longer to read. I liked some of the story line but i throught that it was all abit to detailed and the real story didn't really start till the middle, i nearly lost all interest in the book at the begining but it did pick up! Althrough i liked how it was splitup into sections and it made it a little easier to read as i knew what the section was about. It could of been better if it had less detail and a better story line it would have been easier to read.

I didn't quite know how to react with this book. At first i thought wow! this book i'm really going to like, but then i soon lost interest, but not cos there wasn't enough detail or a good enough storyline. I just generally lost interest with what was happening.
Good read but wouldn't recommend to friends

I thought City of Ghosts had a moving and interesting plot. I really like the way that the author flicked between narrators, timezones and settings, it was really effective. In some places I found the story a bit confusing but once I had read the first couple of chapters I got really engaged in the character's lives. I thought it was an excellent read but I think the title suggested that the book was going to be spooky but it wasn't. I would definitely recommend City of Ghosts.

I think that City Of Ghosts is quite a hard book to read because of the thickness, language and storyline! There are some good and bad points that I can think of about this book:
I enjoyed half the book, the sections of the book that were about Bissens life because of the exciting and easy reading chapters. I also enjoyed it because of the emotional side to it and how it affected me!
I disliked the story about the life of Guardial, Sohni and his orphan friend because of the similarities and the fact the storyline never really changed till at least the middle of the book. I also found this book incredibly hard to get into and I nearly gave up!
Overall though I thought City Of Ghosts has a good storyline but could have had a bit less detail, making it much easier to get into!

To be honest, I found the book incredibly hard to get into (that is, I never did), and although I could see how it was supposed to be emotional, and understood why, I found nothing to relate to and this may be what made the book seem dull, and at many points pointless to me. I might recommend it as a read if you have felt the impact of wars or have been to India, as you may relate to it more, but otherwise I would leave it to read last out of the six books, as it takes so long to read if you cannot get into it, and may take multiple tries to get into it for a long spell of reading.

I couldn't engage in the story for like, well the first half really. The title didn't make sense ad the story appeared to be subplots only. However, towards the end everything began to make sense. I did not get the ghost Heera though- she would have been better as a magician or something. I liked the history of the story, and the tragedy at the end; Bissen was one of my favourite characters though so it was a sad ending. I'll give it 4 out of 5 but only just barely- because I didn't really see the main plot of the story but the messages and subplots made up for this.

I really really really liked city of ghosts. I would say that the only bad thing about it is the title as it makes it sound scary and spooky and odd. But it is not it is about friendship and loyalty and courage. It follows a variety of people different races and religions and it hops about in time. It is mainly set in 1919 but there is some set in 1915 and some set in 1940. I was a little confused at first though because some people said it was hard to read but I found it gripping and very emotional. Overall I think this is a brilliant book and would reccommend it to all of my friends.

City of Ghosts is one of the best of the five books I have so far read in this caterogory because it has a great emotional story. I have to admit however I only liked half of the story. Section one which shows Guardial's love is not as high a quality as most of the novel. It seems to drag on a bit and not give a reason why it is included, it may have been better not included because it only begins to intertwine intself into the rest of the story far too late for it to work effectively. Sohni is a nice character and has an interesting background which makes this section of the story slightly better. The parts involving Keevan was very good, it has nice characters, a nice setting and fitted it perfectly with everything else, this part of the story definately stood out withj the high point being Keevan's moral choice towards the end of Section 3 (The Revolutionaries). My only criticism is that Keevan is an orphan, a regularly used by a lot of stories and is not really original and also he turned against himself within a few pages so it didn't really sink it at first as much as other parts of the story (unless it was intentional?)I enjoyed the whole Bissen Singh plot, his life is so complex that it could have contained an etire novel. the WW1 scenes provided excellant reading and gave a nice insight into the Indian troops that were involved. Despite the Lillian plot being extremely unrealistic it was nicely set out and quite interesting. Each character had there own section dedicated to them and although this worked to its advantage, some parts didn't work quite as well for example Guardial / Sohni's love and the British Army scenes. The ending is sad and is the stand-out achievement in this book, it gives no details yet you feel everything the characters feel and this gives an extremely strong effect to this novel. My favourite thing is how once you've finished the book, you begin to realise how inhumane the British were in India, but then again so are the revolutionaries. I feel that it's definately the most thought-provoking book I've read in ages. There were a few things I disliked, the language used makes no sense, why is there swear words? The ghosts were un-nessacery and don't add anything to the novel but only annoyed me after a while. The scenes were quite good emotionally but not much else.
Best Character: Bissen Singh
Character(s) that Could have being Improved: Guardial.
Best Scene(s): Sections 4,6 and 7 (The WW1 bit, The Lillian bit and the end)
Scene(s) that could have Being Improved: Sections 1 and 5 (The Beginning and the other Guardial section)
Plot Rating: 4
Character Rating: 3
Emotional Rating: 5
Overall Rating: 4

This book had a profound effect on me due to it being set in a country I am partly familiar with and connected to. The book informs us of the history behind the war that most people would never know such as one third of the British troops weren't from Britain. Bali Rai came to our school and he inspired me to reaD CITY OF GHOSTS. I am glad he did as it was an excellent read. I liked the way the author switched between settings and time zones and also the character point of veiws as it was very effective. The characters were really beleiveable and I got sucked into their individual interesting stories. The plot in places was confusing although overall it was an easy read. My favourite character was Bissen Singh as his emotional state was quite interesting with the drugs and that. I would definitely recommemnd this to other teenagers.
