I really enjoyed this book.I loved the historical plot, often in historical books they tend to get boring but Celia Rees has managed to pull off a really great read. The characters were great and really believable, there was a good range of different people in the book giving it depth also you got really attached to the characters as you knew about their background and lives without putting you off the book.I liked the unusual idea of Sovay being not all that she seems. She gives two different takes on the story. Also her personality really shows through in the book.I loved this book although it was a bit hard to get into and sometimes a bit unrealistic.

This book is AMAZING! it is such a thrilling read, the story is very detailed and complecated so you need to spend time on it. it is not one of those books you can skim read and you know most of the story, it takes time. The base of it is that it is 1749 during the revolution between france and nearly the whole of europe. Sovay, the girl on the front cover, is going in search of her father who is going to be arrested because he is a suspect of treason. As the story thickens the plot gets very deep and intense many new characters are introduced and a small love triangle forms. i would give this book a 5 out of 5 for sure brilliance.

i liked sovay and thought it was an all right book but i really struggled to get into it as it was way descibtive and i felt like i t could if had more exciting plots in it. i gave it a 3 out of 5 because althrough i liked sovay i think the writer could improve it as i think it was written really on an adults basic. i do like historical stories but this was really a bit confusing with all the different plots and it could of been better. i would recommend it to some one who likes this type of book

Based on other reviews, people don't like this book and I can see why. It's adult in style, text and characters but I disagree because although I aren't too keen on the style of writing, I think it was definately the best written in terms of English but this doesn't mean I love the novel, I like half of it. Plot 1 is about Sovay the highwayma. Plot 2 is some strange nobleman who's evil and Plot 3 is all about the French Revolution so that's the simple bit over and done with. Plot 1 is amazing, her character just draws life from this and it amazingly just settles in althpugh the various characters become confusing. Plot 2 was just plain awful in comparison to Plot 1, it dragged on over 200 pages with every character being pulled out of character and fitted into a story which didn't suit the historical setting. It took me ages to read this because of how difficult it was to understand. The finale of this plot with the balloon was awful as it was just an excuse for some action in the novel. Plot 3 was all about the French Revolution and it worked well historically but was maybe a bit misplaced in this book, the ending left little explanation of what came next apart from Hugh's final words which seemed contrived. I don't have much to say except great novel, bad middle section ruins the book. It's a difficult book to read but rewarding. Only experienced readers (like English Teachers) should attempt to read this.

I have recently just finished Sovay and I was left a little disappointed. The story seemed quite interesting at the beginning, but as I got to about half way, I really struggled to keep reading it.
I liked the idea of it set around a girls life, with a father in trouble, and I didn't mind the way it was written.
But, as I progressed I found it harder and harder to enjoy. The story was quite the same and I thought it a little too detailed!
Overall, I didn't really enjoy this book, but if it was less detailed, and more eventful I might try reading it again!
I also thought it could be a marmite book where you either love it or don't! But it all depends on what you like to read and what type of person you are.

I really enjoyed this book because I found with this book i could really relate to the characters and how they were feeling throughout some of the events. The historical time line and events that occurred during this book made up a crucial part to this style of writing, and without it this book would have been a disappointing read. Although at first i thought 'Sovay', for me, would have been a really boring book i was soon mistaken this is because the opening scene didn't appeal to me as much as id hoped and didn't allow me to believe that this book would have captured my attention so thoroughly.

I think that sovay, allround was quite a good book. My problem was that I couldn't get really into it or was ever really gripped. It was written really well but I think the whole plot was a bit odd, and never really got what was going on until the end. Overall it was a very good book but not leeds book award standards.

I really disliked this book because it was boring there was no plot whatsoever it was just so confusing i would not recommend this book to anyone.the characters were equally as confusing as the plot random characters just popped up out of nowhere and they expect you to just carry on with the story even thougth you don't know who the main character was talking to half the time. Also the main Character was confusing who was this person. The wrting was just confusing the words were long and confusing and i could barley finish a chapter i am dissaponted with this book i thought as soon as i read the blurb it would be and adventure about a female highway robber but it turned out to be just plain boring.I would definatly not reccomend this book to anyone and i would not go out of my way to read this book

I liked the story lineand the story is quite interesting. The historical element showed an interesting approach to wealth, love and crime. I really liked the highway robbery part.

It was an okay book. I liked how it was written - I know, I know - because I felt what I imagined the character's would have felt. For it's genre, it was quite a good book - just simply not one I would go out of my way to read.
Still quite a good read, nonetheless.

I thought this book was absolutely amazing! Celia Rees has really managed to bring 1794 England to life. All the way through the book, I could really envisage the world that the author managed to create, and I got to know all of the characters very well.
When tension was built, it was built really well, so that when necessary the tension crescendoed dramatically, leaving me on the edge of my seat. The author had managed to create just the right amount of tension in the right places, so that itreally complimented the plot.
The plot was outstanding, and I found the time in which Celia Rees had chosen to set "Sovay" was well thought out. The importance of the year 1794 is always present within this treasure trove of historical fiction, but the plot did not focus completely on the French Revolution, making this book much more enjoyable than if it had only been about this historical event.
Admittedly, the book had a slightly slow start, but after the first few pages, when I understood what was happening I couldn't put this book down. In "Sovay," Celia Rees has managed to keep a perfect sense of timing throughout the novel.
I recommend this book to absolutely everone! It is beautifully written and makes you feel as if you are there with the characters, doing what they are doing.

Amazing. I loved the book, and it was amazing how much could come out of a simple song. It showed me a lot about the world, but I did feel that some parts were a bit lost in the storyline, it would have been nice to see some of the characters from the start appear near the end. Overall though, definitely something I would recommend.

At first I thought Sovay was going to be a real page turner but by the end I was left a little disapointed. Certain parts of this adventure were quite exicting but I felt that some chapters were a little random and I got confused between some of minor characters. Also I thought that the plot was in places over complicated. I did relate to the main characters and I thought that they were described extremely well.I think that Sovay is quite a good read but I wouldn't recommend it to friends.
