Who Wrote It?

Phil Earle never wanted to be a writer growing up. He wanted to be a professional footballer for the mighty Hull City. Phil also hated reading novels as a child, but discovered a love of comics and graphic novels. After University, he had a number of jobs in pubs, travel agencies, and as a care worker in a residential children’s home. It was this incredible experience that influenced his writing of Being Billy and Saving Daisy. Phil says that the best thing that ever happened to him was getting a job in the children’s section of a bookshop. It was whilst working there that he realised he wanted to try writing for young people. Phil worked in the bookshop for five years, before taking a job in publishing, and now he splits his working life between selling books for a publisher, and writing his own.

What's It About?

Jake Biggs’s dad works in demolition. All week long he knocks down buildings from the cockpit of his crane, but at weekends he becomes Demolition Man, twenty stone of Man Mountain in a leotard, the best wrestler in town, and Jake couldn’t be prouder! There’s just one thing that upsets him – his dad wants it kept a secret. But when the opportunity arises to enter his dad into an international wrestling competition, Jake can’t resist. While Demolition Dad unashamedly plugs the many delights of wrestling and could well inspire a whole new army of fans, it is really a book about love, in particular the love between a boy and his dad. A warm, funny and genuinely touching story of family relationships.

Demolition Dad is the best book Iv'e read this year.

Naomi from Rawdon St.Peter's Primary School:

Jake wants his dad, George Biggs, to be a wrestling superstar, by changing who he really is. This doesn't go to plan, and George Biggs gets into bother. Jake falls into a dangerous situation which gets him onto TV.When his dad sees, he reacts and becomes a real superstar, in a most unexpected and gripping way.

I liked this book because of the brilliant description of the characters and the scenery - which made these seem real.I would recommend this book for people who understand wrestling.

Oliver from Otley All Saints primary school:

This book was very exciting it took a bit of time to get into but at about page 50 it got so exciting when Mr Mc Bride came and said that George had won.It was an amazing twist when George came out on the ring as a beefeater and when he got back I really felt for him. The artwork was a very nice touch, but the story was set out really well because it made you feel for all the characters. Masher was an amzing bully he does everything that a bully in real life would do. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I hope to see more/a sequel to this amzing book. Back to Masher if I read other types of books they don`t really make the bully very realistic or sinister his jokes/pranks were really funny. So please reply to my review I really enjoyed the book and I`m sure everyone else will too. Keep on writing!

Oliver gave Demolition Dad 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Mel Foster and the Demon Butler by Julia Golding.

Also because I wanted it to put me on the edge of my seat when I was reading it. I would not recommend this book to any one who has no idea what wrestling is or how it works. I would also not recommend this book to any body above the age of 10. I also dont like this book because it isn't funny at the end. Charlotte from Calverley c of e:

I thought this book was really good. When first started reading it I thought it would be all about wrestling but when I finished I realised it was all about the relationship between Jake and his dad. I thought it was quite funny, but not as funny as I thought it would be. My favourite character was George Biggs because I thought he was very strong physically and mentally. My favourite part of the story was at the end where everything ended happily. I thought this book was a little bit too easy for people my age but it is definitely good for people aged 8-10. From the front cover I thought it was going to better than It actually was. This is my 2nd favourite book so far. I would recommend it to others.

Charlotte gave Demolition Dad 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Mel Foster and the Demon Butler by Julia Golding.

My favourite character was George Biggs because he is funny and looks out for his kids and loves them very much. A bit like my dad. I didn't think much of the main character but I did like Floss (Jake's best friend) because she was funny and clever. I found this book quite interesting and it had a lot of twists and turns. Some of the illustrations were funny. I found the ending amusing because even though George Biggs ran away (to a kebab shop with a train station next to it that know one goes to.) George Biggs saw his child on the news so ran to save him out of the Ugly Sisters house that had fallen down. The cover stood out to me and grabbed my attention. It was a nice change to the other books I have read because the other ones were serious and mysterious. My favourite character was Enid because every one thought she was a robot and she took control over the Biggs family like they were her own children while Lucie was at her job on a airplane.

Jake's dad (George Biggs) has a HUGE secret. By day he works on a building site and he specializes in demolition. But by night he's a wrestler who goes by the name of... Demolition Man!

This book was a fairly easy read despite this I still found it extremely funny and enjoyable. At some parts in the story I found it a bit far-fetched so I didn't really feel like it could happen in real-life. This made the book harder to relate to. On the whole this is a good book, perfect for people are just starting to get in to reading.

George gave Demolition Dad 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Martha from Southroyd primary :

I found this book funny, amusing but a bit predictive. The book is about a boy called Jake and his dad who both have a special love for wrestling. One of my favourite moments is the confusion in the family when Arnie McBride turns up at Jakes house to announce that Jakes dad had won a competition for a lifetime opportunity to be a wrestler and become incredibly rich that Jake had entered his dad for without him or his mum Knowing. My favourite character is Jake because he is very committed to making his dad be a wrestler and helps him to achieve it by finding out lots of things about the other wrestlers and there weaknesses.

Martha gave Demolition Dad 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Gorilla Dawn by Gill Lewis.

Grace from Green Lane Primary Academy:

Demolition Dad is a book about a boy Jake and his Dad. Jake's dad (George Biggs) worked in demolition, every weekday he was knocking down buildings with cranes! But when it gets to the weekend George becomes the Demoliton Man! He didnt want the word to be spread but when Jake finds the ultimate competition, it was up to Jake to persuade Dad to enter.

My favourite character in the book was by far Jake. He was loyal and tried his best to help his dad throughout the story even through hard times. The characters felt real to me, however, I usually read stories and imagine that they're reality.

The story made me laugh and sometimes made me a curious of what would happen next. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop! I really liked the story! There wasn't really anything that I disliked about the book, sometimes it was a little to sad for my liking.

I enjoyed reading this book, I recommend it to ages 8-11 and to people who like a bit of comedy!

Grace gave Demolition Dad 5 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Sarah from Green Lane Primary Academy:

Demolition Dad is a hilarious and funny book about an eleven year old boy [ Jake Biggs ] who has crazy obsession over wrestling. His father - George Biggs - works in demolition every week day , but by Saturday he is known as the tremendous Demolition Man!!! However the only problem is that George wants it to be kept as a secret. When Jake finds out that there is a competition, he is eager to enter his father, so he can defeat the one and only Tsunami Terror. But when the big day arrives, George seems to be so frightened take on the challenge.

My favorite character is Jake because he still tried to help his dad, even though so much had happened.

My favorite part of the story was the ending because it was quite tense when Jake and his friends got stuck in the crumbling cave. Also it was quite lovely reading the part when George rescued them - risking his own life.

I would recommend this book to children aged 7-11 because it is an: hilarious, funny and loving book to read.

Sarah gave Demolition Dad 5 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Freya from Wigton Moor Primary School:

I think Demoltition Dad is a really good book because at some parts it's really unpredictable but at other parts it is. I really enjoyed the story line and the ilustrations were really good too! It's also good how different events were described well.

Freya gave Demolition Dad 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Gorilla Dawn by Gill Lewis.

Danielle from GreenLanePrimaryAcademy:

Welcome to the world of wrestling. Sit tight as you encounter George Biggs (Demolition Dad) and his son Jake:his no 1 fan.George is content with doing a few silly fights on the weekend but Jake wants more for his dad. He wants the Demolition dad to go global. However is Jake helping his dad or is dad fine just the way he is

I didn't really like the look of the book it gave me a very anti-female kind of vibe. However I enjoyed it all the same. I especially enjoyed the part of the book where Phil Earle put a cheeky aside in about bending the pages which I do all the time!

My favorite character in the book is Jake because his love for his dad is clearly visible through out the book and even though his plan for his dads fame it's still heart-warming.

If I had to describe this book in 3 words it would be: Hilarious, comforting and beautifully written.

I'd recommend this book to 7-11 because even though it in the 9-11 category it's an easy read.

keep writing !

Eve from Southroyd primary:

Demolition Dad is a good book and the characters in the book give it a certain edge. However sometimes the story's events and characters emotions seem to be a bit repetitive. I would say this book would be a good book for 8-10 year olds because ,although a good reading for pleasure book, it doesn't hold much of a challenge for older readers.

Daniel from Westgate Primary School:

Demolition Dad was a very good book, full of action and fun. The main character is called Ben, and his dad is a secret wrestler at weekends and a builder during the week. Ben enters his dad into a wrestling competition, which turns out to be a lot harder than Ben expects…

This book is funny and well-written, but kind of predictable towards the end. My favourite character was Demolition Dad because he ate a lot and is the complete opposite of my dad. The only similarity is that they’re both great dads.

I give this book 4 out of 5 as the story is enjoyable, but doesn’t have any twists. It is a short book and an easy read - I managed to finish it in 2 days.

I would recommend this book to 10 year olds and under because it’s a bit of an easy-going read - still a great book though!

Hattie from Thorner C of E Primary School:

Demolition Dad was an action-packed book with a great moral to the story - 'Don't push people past their limits' or 'Don't make people do things they don't want to'. I love the connection between Jake and his Dad and like their Saturday outings. If you like wrestling then you're in for a treat! The only let down was that it was quite predictable towards the end... I would have preferred a twist!

Hattie gave Demolition Dad 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Gorilla Dawn by Gill Lewis.

Ella from Crossley Street :

I highly recommend this book. It has great humour and it also made me fall out of bed when reading it. My favourite bit was when they were all clueless about the WOW! entry and then Jake came and said he entered dad. I think another thing that will make people laugh is how Mouse is addicted to super heroes! This book was superb and had an amazing storyline that kept flowing.

Ella gave Demolition Dad 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Gorilla Dawn by Gill Lewis.

Edwin from Thorner Primary school:

Coburn gave Demolition Dad 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

James from Thorner C of E Primary SChool:
