Who Wrote It?

For as long as she can remember Gill Lewis has been fascinated with animals. She grew up in an ordinary house, with an extraordinary garden. It was there that she discovered slow worms and newts, and butterflies and beetles. She even had a hospital for small animals and insects in her back garden!  When she grew up Gill become a vet and her work took her from the wilds of Africa to the frozen lands of the Arctic.

She rediscovered children’s books by reading to her own children, and couldn’t help dreaming up her own stories too.  She went back to university to study Writing for Young People, where she learned how to craft her stories.

Gill lives in Somerset with her family and a collection of pets including dogs, chickens and a rescued Shetland pony.

What's It About?

Gorilla Dawn tells the story of Imara, a young girl abducted from her village home, and Bobo, the son of a wildlife ranger, who are imprisoned by a group of rebel soldiers deep in the heart of the African jungle. When the rebels capture a baby gorilla, intending to sell him into captivity, the children vow to return him to his family in the wild before it’s too late. The consequences of getting caught are too terrible to think about, but the children are brave and determined. Will the bond between the gorilla and the children finally give them the courage they need to escape the rebels and can they ever find true safety?

Fact File

Gill’s first book, Sky Hawk, won the Leeds Book Awards 9-11 category in 2012.

You can usually find Gill in her tree house dreaming up new stories, with a cup of coffee and a plate of biscuits, in the company of squirrels.

Gill loves drawing and finds that her route into storytelling is often through sketching the characters and scenes from her stories before she starts writing them.

I didn't like this book that much because I thought is was a very boring start and I think it should have more action. I felt like nothing new was happening and it was going around in circles but I didn't get chance to finish the book but I think if Gill Lewis added these features I think it would be a lot better book.

Gorilla dawn was my favourite of all of the books and I would defiantly recommend it to people who like adventure. It is a book about a girl called Imara- who is the Black Mamba's spirit child- and a boy called BoBo that work together to get a baby gorilla (that Imara named Kitwana) safe and away from the Black Mamba. My favourite character was Imara because even when people told her that her powers were weakening wouldn't get angry with them she would just tell them "You know nothing about my powers," and would walk away.

Helena gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Morgan from green lane Primary Academy:

I am rating this book 4 out of 5 because in the book it can be a bit repetitive and it is quite long for what it is.

It is about two characters ones name is Bobo the other is Imara. Imara is a girl who is known as the spirit child of a tribe called the black mambas. Bobo is a boy who's dad has been killed as he was moving a group of gorillas in the forested mountains of central Africa.

They get caught up in a huge mine made by the mambas which is supping coltan to are world the morden world.

This book was a brilliant book because instead of adding lots of information, the author chose an interesting subject to write about. Grace from Hollybush:

I loved the book very much 👧I liked how the devil spoke in capital letters.I thought the ending was a bit sad but I suppose it would have been better for kitwana and what his mum would have wanted. Also it would have been better for kitwana to have milk from his mum I would have preferred it if you told me the name of kitwana mum.I think that 10 year olds and over should read this book because there's some very emotional parts in it.

Grace gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Melissa from Lawns Park Primary School:

Sarah from Green Lane Primary Academy:

Gorilla Dawn illustrates the story of a girl called Imara [who has been captured by a group of rebels -The Black Mambas]. While Imara AKA the spirit girl has been working for the group of rebels, Bobo gets captured by the Black Mambas. This had happened because he wanted to prove his father's innocence. The pair also find a baby gorilla captured and find out he is being intended to be sold in captivity. Imara wants to help Bobo prove his father's innocence, but she doesn't want to lose Kitwana [the baby gorilla].

Would she take the right decision or not?

My favorite character would have to be Imara as she always took the right decision even though the demon inside her told her not to.

Gorilla Dawn is a story about friendship and love. I recommend this book to 11 to 13 year olds and even if they don't like animals I think they will enjoy it to.

Sarah gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Louisa from Ryecroft Academy :

This book was amazing the story line was so moving and the writing was so real but the reason I gave it a 4 is because I didn't like the end.It was sort of boring and I thought it was sad and I would of liked a happy ending.

Anam from Alwoodley Primary School:

I really loved reading the book, however at the beginning it was too descriptive and took a long time to get into the real meaning of it.Later on in the book, the story becomes more active and emotional. Some parts don't make sense, but as you read further on, previous parts normally have more meaning to the reader. Most of the chapters had cliff-hangers, that made me want to read on.

Ariane gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Edie from Weetwood primary school:

This book was OK. I liked the way the girl and the monkey become friends but it was quite boring and a bit scary. it could have done with a bit more description of characters other than the girl and the story didn't flow properly at the start in my opinion. Gorilla Dawn was a very touching story, it nearly made me cry. This book had a very touching ending and story line. The letter at the end (written by Gill Lewis) has really inspired me to do something to help Gorillas and the villages affected by rebel camps. Freya from Shire oak:

My book was Gorilla Dawn. The main characters are Imara who is a spirit child, the Black Mamba is also a main character because he commands the rebel camp. I thought it was interesting and I couldn't put it down. Even though the book was captivating it was incredibly sinister. I disliked the Black Mamba because he is super strict and never forgives anyone. I recommend this book to people who are 9 years or older because it is very emotional.

Kamaldeep from Alwoodley Primery School:

The reason I like this book because it has emotional writing,it is a long book and has lots of adventure. Also the characters my favourite characters are rat and Imra.Imra is a confusing girl and works for the Black Mamba, she also has a strong personality.Rat is the reason some of the book is hilarious because he walks and talks in a funny way such as legs together and speaks like a alien that knows English. Also the reason I like it is that it is set in Africa and Gill Lewis is a new author to me and after Gorilla Dawn I might read Sky Hawk.

Kamaldeep gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Kornelia from Moor allerton hall primary:

This book is an interesting one, in which there is a rebel group that captured a baby gorilla. My favourite paragraph was this "you are mine Imari, the day they cut you open I climbed in, keep me safe in here and I will support you, if you let me out they see your fears and you will die.You cannot live with me, yet you cannot survive without me, you are mine Imari you're the demons' child"

I extremely enjoyed this book. It was confusing at first but as I got into it it was easier to picture it and understand the story. I loved the way that once every two chapters it changes the perspective of the person. It gave me a really good idea of what other characters were feeling. My favourite character was Imara the main girl in the book. She is fierce and strong and feared by people which makes her a strong confident character. It also gives a good picture of the setting and things around the characters. If you are a kid who likes a tense and suspensive story with determined characters then you will love this book as I did.

Bilal from Alwoodley primary school:

Gorilla Dawn is a fantastic book and it suits my adventure genre. The author (Gill Lewis)is an amazing writer and she made me turn page to page to end the book .I really wanted to find out how the book ended and if it ended happily. The scene that grabbed my attention was the first bit. I was a bit confused that there was a demon in Imara however the scene transports you straight to the heart of the African jungle. This author is my second best and if I can get my hands on another book of Gill Lewis I would read it cover to cover. Sky Hawk is the book I want. Gill Lewis is a great author and I look forward to reading other books of hers. I hope other people are inspired and will take my advice and read this book.

Maryam from Alwoodley Primary School:

I found this book exceedingly good. I found the style hard to understand but except from that it's amazing and it was my type of book. Even though it was emotional I got the gist of it. Maryam gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Ambur from Alwoodley Primary School:

This book was heart touching and emotional for it had me gripped from the beginning.Exiding my expectations,my favourite character was Imara because she is ready for adventure and kind, writing her own story however she is thought to be daughter of the devil and that's what pulled me in. However it doesn't explain how she looked but apart from that it is very realistic. Believable and adventurous I would recommend this to adventure lovers and animal lovers. I would wanto read more.

Ambur gave Gorilla Dawn 4 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Oliver from Otley all saints primary school:

This was a amazing book I`m astonished you can think so creatively. The idea of having one of the most dangerous snakes as the (bad team)is ingenius. If you answer back where did you get the idea for having a spirit child? It was very gripping when the black mamba were heard and Bobo went to see if the police chief and his team were telling the truth about Bobo`s father. Kitwana was a very cute gorilla .To sum up it was a very good book I am definitely going to read Sky Hawk next. Please reply and keep writing!

Oliver gave Gorilla Dawn 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

Lucinda from Featherbank Primary School:

I rated Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 for many reasons, mainly because of the way everything fell perfectly into place. It was extremely good especially when Gill Lewis described the things around her, somehow she transfixed me in this amazing book and made me not want to leave Imara and Bobo's world.

She made her book very emotional by playing around with her words. I think Gill Lewis definitely has a chance of winning the Leeds Book Awards.

This book was incredibly fun and exciting. I couldn't put it down after the first few pages. I was soon engaged in the interesting world of frightening fantasy. Evie gave Gorilla Dawn 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Mel Foster and the Demon Butler by Julia Golding.

Alanis from Hunslet St Marys:

This book was exceedingly good and might have a chance of winning. Gorilla Dawn is funny, scary and surprising in parts. Alanis gave Gorilla Dawn 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

Leah from Hunslet St Marys :

Gorilla Dawn was a really interesting and adventurous book although it didn't describe the characters enough until the end of the book. I am rating this book a four because it is really mysterious and a lot of adventures in it as well, but it wasn't describing what they had to wear and what colour hair they had and stuff like that.Gill Lewis must have worked her hardest to write this book.

Leah gave Gorilla Dawn 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Chloe from Hunslet st Marys :

Imira is a young African girl living in a rebel camp in Congo. The rebels go by the name of the Mamabas. She is their spirit child because she was bitten by a Black Mamaba (the deadliest snake in Congo) and survived. The rebels are mining for an expensive ore called coltan. At the same time they have unintentionally disturbed a family of Silverback Gorillas. The gorillas and the forest rangers are forced to move. Imira mothers a captured gorilla and they are slowly becoming attached to each other.

This book fully deserves 5/5 because it has an incredible story line and because of this it feels like you are in the African jungle Imira. This is a sensational book with unexpected twists and turns round every corner. 😋

Ella-Rois from Holy Family Catholic Primary School:

In my opinion this book was impecable because the link between the characters was amazing. It had great emotions, and I could picture the characters in my mind. The font in the book was just right for me and it was the right size. Every time I read a page I just wanted to keep on reading. I would never ever pick an animal book but since I have read this I am going to read different genre's that I would never pick. If I was to describe this book in 3 words they would be amazing, descriptive and exeptional. I liked it at the end because I found out that Gill [author] was actually a vet and that was a shock for me. For someone who likes animal books this book would really suit them.

Ella-Rois gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine.

ABIGAIL from HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL:

I gave this book 3/5 it has some really good bits but a few bad bits. The chapters were short and got to the point which is what i like. It kept me guessing and turning the pages.I felt that I was taking different sides in this book. This book had parts which I also liked. If I were to give a reader advice I would tell an adventurous person to read this book. If I were to describe this book in three words I would say emotional, different sided and interesting. My favourite part was the end of the book but it was very upsetting for the mamba but good for Imara.I really liked the fact that Gill LEWIS at the end wrote a letter to the reader gaving gorrila facts and put in what we can do to help gorrilas.I also saw Imara as a girl in boys clothes. Overall this book isn't my type but I could still get the meaning.

ABIGAIL gave Gorilla Dawn 3 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

leon from holy family catholic primary shcool:

I thought this book was amazing because it was action packed and I've noticed that round every corner I'm tempted and I just wanted to read it. This story was such a lovable one. The bonds between the characters were amazing I fell in love with them all! The book had a great emotional feel I personally don't like animal books but this changed my mind. There were a lot of life lessons and it gave me a lot of things to think about, such as my life style. The life lessons helped me to relate to the book even though its fictional and I haven't felt the fear they have. The book got so intense at times I had to take 5 minutes away, the way they worded things was exceptional which made me want to read on! A definite 5/5 it was amazing!

I thought that this book was a brilliant book and had a very interesting story.I also like the way it is set out into chapters and the way that at the start it is in two different settings but after about a third of the book the main characters meet. The only reason it isn't 5/5 is because the characters weren't always clear.

Dominic from Ryecroft Academy:

This book is about a group of children who fight to save a young gorilla's life. I love this book because it is so descriptive and really makes want to keep on reading. My favourite character is Imara because the way the book is written it makes me feel sorry for her and made me want to read more about her life. It made me cry only a little bit though and a little bit when I finished the book because it is so good I didn't want it to end, therefore I rated this 5 out of 5. This book well I couldn't say anything more about it really aside from it is simply wonderful and anyone who reads it will enjoy it.

Dominic gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

Daniel from Westgate Primary School:

Gorilla Dawn was an amazing book, jam-packed with adventure and sadness.

Imara survives being bitted by a black mamba, but is captured by a band of rebels (called The Mambas) who are damaging the forest for money. The Mambas use Imara as their "spirit child", as when she was bitten by the snake, the devil crept inside her, and so she can see how people will die and also curse or protect them. Imara befriends a gorilla, also captured by The Mambas. The gorilla thinks of Imara as her mother, and will not leave her side. Will Imara turn back to good or be kept evil by the devil? Meanwhile, Bobo, whose father is thought to have joined The Mambas, is determined to prove his father's innocence. But when The Mambas capture him, things turn out to be more difficult than expected.

Gill Lewis has written a truly magnificent book which makes you want to read on from the very first word to the final sentence. She uses amazing vocabulary and has a fantastic storyline. I would recommend this to 10 year olds and over, because it is a long book with a challenging plot. A great 5 out of 5 book, full of action and excitement. Best book ever!

Daniel gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons.

Gorilla Dawn is a really good book for the age limit and it is really fun to read if you like twists and turns. You would like this book if you like bad people who turn good. I think Gill Lewis should write another book so I could read it. This book joined me everywhere I went even when I went for tea.

Kyle gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Emma from Southroyd Primary:

This book was really hard to get into at first however I really enjoyed the layout and characteristics of the book. The book is entertaining aswell as deep in thoughts. When I mean deep, I mean the relationships between the characters.

Harry from Allerton Bywater Primary:

I liked the plot and the plot twist near the end, and how Imara's personality changes throughout the book.

One of the only flaws in the book was everything changed rather quickly near the end.

Harry gave Gorilla Dawn 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

Holly from Beeston Primary School:

This book is one of the best I've read. The story is about two children (Imara and Bobo) who are part of the Black Mamba's camp. My favourite character was Imara because she has so much depth in personality. The only thing I think could've been better was that the story seems to drag itself out a bit near the beginning. This book is brilliant and I think people should definitely read it.

Holly gave Gorilla Dawn 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine.

Cerys from Weetwood primary school:

I liked the fact that the chapters were told from different perspectives. It was really interesting but a little bit dull at times.

Danielle from GreenLanePrimaryAcademy:

Will Imira ever make her break for freedom or does the devil inside her have other plans...

Imira and Bobo have their special story to tell. Each with it's own unique heartache. Imira abducted from her village and Bobo, who's dads a wildlife ranger. However, when a group of rebel soldiers take an innocent gorilla to send him into captivity it's Imira and Bobo's turn to do the right thing.

I did not enjoy this book at the start it was confusing and didn't make sense but as the pages started to unfold the once ambiguous plot became clearer.

I think this book as intended to make readers more aware of animals and that all living creatures are to be treated with respect.

This book(like many) did not have many illustrations apart from the one on the chapters so that reader had to think hard about how their character would look like. However this wasn't hard because the language used was extremely effective.

I love the characters in Gorilla dawn they are ordinary children who lives are effected by poverty. The characters are believable which gets the reader hooked all the time. I loved them all but I fell for Imira she was such a lovable character it's hard not to!

My favorite part in the book is the middle where things make more sense and become clearer.

I give Gorilla Dawn a 4 out of 5 because there would need to be some improvement on the starter but the rest of it is fabulous I will definitely look out for Gill Lewis books more often :)

Danielle gave Gorilla Dawn 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

MEGAN from HORSFORTH FEATHERBANK PRIMARY SCHOOL:

This book was absolutely fantastic. The characters are extremely well thought through with many great descriptions to help you imagine what the scenes look like, what the people look like and not to mention at the beginning of a chapter, when they have an illustrated picture to give you a clue of what happens. I gave this book a four star rating because nothing is perfect and there is always room for improvement. It has excellent vocabulary and it has an interesting plot line. This book also draws you in and it doesn't give away the dilemma or the problem straight away and then, all of a sudden, it throws it at you and you can't stop reading it! I would read this book again and again and again. Gill Lewis is definitely going to be very popular in the future. You will hopefully enjoy this book (I know I did!)

This was a interesting book, the reason I rated it 3/5 was because you couldn't really get what was going on at the start. It started to make sense after a while. It had lots of emotion like Frog dying:( If you are an animal lover then go and read it what are you waiting for????

This book is about a baby gorilla, a young boy(Bobo) and a girl(Imara). I couldn't put this book down. It was very exciting and it was an emotional roller-coaster. Surprisingly, this book stood out from all the others. Despite the fact I didn't understand it that much at the beginning it turned out to be the best book I've ever read! My favourite part is when Imara doesn't want to leave the adorable baby gorilla's side-she becomes attached to him. I gave this book 5 out of 5 because I couldn't wait to turn to the next page and I was really sad when it ended. I would definitely recommend this book!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved how it was told in 3 different point of views. My favourite character was Imara. I also thought Kitwana the gorilla played a very important role. In my opinion I thought this book was extremely dramatic which I liked lots. I am very glad Bobo's dad didn't swap onto the side of the enemy and that the police chief was lying, and Bobo and Saka had evidence he was. This book also had a bit of humour and made me laugh, especially when frog was involved, until the tragedy near the end of the book.
