Who Wrote It?

David Solomons has been writing screenplays for many years. His first feature film was an adaptation of Five Children and It (starring Kenneth Branagh and Eddie Izzard).

My Brother is a Superhero is his first novel for children, and he has already begun work on a sequel, entitled My Gym Teacher is an Overlord, which will be published in July 2016.

He was born in Glasgow and now lives in Dorset with his wife, the novelist Natasha Solomons, and their son.

What's It About?

Luke is a comic-mad eleven-year old who shares a treehouse with his geeky older brother, Zack. Luke’s only mistake is to go for a wee right at the wrong time. While he’s gone, an alien gives his undeserving, never-read-a-comic-in-his-life brother superpowers and then tells him to save the universe. Luke is massively annoyed about this, but when Zack is kidnapped by his arch-nemesis, Luke and his friends have only five days to find him and save the world.

Fact File

My Brother is a Superhero was originally written for David's son... who is called Luke.

David wrote a novelization of one of his film screenplays, called Not Another Happy Ending.

David's wife, Natasha, is a New York Times best-selling author.

Martha from Calverly C of E:

I thought this book was very enjoyable and great story. At first I didn't think I would like it but once I started reading it was very funny and creative. My favourite character was Luke because he was very funny and he made me laugh and I think he had a great personality. My favourite parts of the book was when Zach was learning how to use his superpowers. I loved this book and I would recommend it to others.

Martha gave My Brother is a Superhero 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Charlotte from Calverley C of E school:

I liked this book. I thought it was interesting and it had a good story line and a good plot. The book had lots of twists and turns which I really enjoyed although, it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I felt like it was aimed more at boys than girls and I don't usually read books like this, so it wasn't one of my favourites. This book wasn't for me, although, it would be if you enjoyed reading superhero and fantasy stories.

The book was very different to how the cover looks! The book was not humer and had a heavy relationship plot which gave an emotional feel. The book was not that greatest but I dont regret reading it! It started out good but after chapter 10 it got increadably boring.

ABIGAIL-FALLON from HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL:

I gave this book 3/5.I really liked the first ten chapters. It had a lot of humour and a bit of romance. My favourite character was Cara-Lee, I felt that she was a little bit like me. The characters felt real to me - well Zach and Luke. Cara and Laras names as sisters dont feel real. My favourite part of the book was the first.

This book made me laugh, but only to the first ten chapters. After the first ten chapters I lost interest as it lost its humour and it got into the main point of the story and I dont like superheroes.I noticed that this book was mainly about the brothers relationship. Overall I would recommend this to anybody who likes relationships.

I really like this book because I found it really funny and its a book that I just could not put down. I would have normally not pick this out of a book store but it really surprised me. Olivia gave My Brother is a Superhero 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Mona from Aleoodley primary school :

I started reading this book because the cover really captured my eye. I wanted to hold the book and turn its pages to discover whether or not the story matched my genre. Luckily my instincts proved to be correct. The story is fantastic! Three words to describe this book:funny and entertaining! At first I thought it would be a giddy childish book but I thought wrong instead it included a lot of humour and problrms you may have in your life. I recommend this book to people who like comics!

Mona gave My Brother is a Superhero 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Katarina from Adel Primary School:

This book was amazing! I devoured it in a day and a half and loved every word of it! At first I thought it was going to be really cheesy and silly but it surprised me by not only having humor and sarcasm, but also including problems and emotions you have in real life. The only thing I didn't love about this book was some of the names used like 'Zorbon'. I recommend this book to anyone who likes funny books that hook you from the first page.

Katarina gave My Brother is a Superhero 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

Harry from Green Lane Primary Academy:

I have superpowers Zack announces to a frankly startled Luke, that had just come back from having a wee. You what exclaims Luke. Had Zorbon The Decider chosen the right brother. can Zack stop Nemesis and save the world, or will it just be worldwide destruction and terror. Zorbon and his parallel universe, where sponge cake tastes different, is depending on Zack. The unlikely hero turns out to be the perfect match for the job. I rate this book 5, because it has all of the elements to it and has excitement. Could this book be a winner. Could David Solomon be a champion or could he come second by a whisker. So far he is my second favourite author after Phil Earle. It was hilarious

Harry gave My Brother is a Superhero 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

leon from holy family:

Daniel from St.Nicholas Catholic Primary School:

My favorite character is Star Lad because he has all types of different powers, like telekinesis and the ability to breath in water. He made me feel amazed and a tiny bit jealous, because he can do extraordinary things that none of us can do. For me, the book is great but there are a very small number of boring bits that aren't necessary like when Star Lad was gossiping about Clara, therefore I give it a 4.

Daniel gave My Brother is a Superhero 4 out of 5 and now plans to read The Black Lotus by Kieran Fanning.

Hattie from Thorner C of E Primary School:

Next time YOU'RE in a tree house with your brother and you need a wee...hold it in because 'Zorbon the Decider' might decide to come and give you superpowers! How would you like it if your never-read-a-comic brother,Zack gets given what everyone dreams...SUPERPOWERS!And you the outraged comic-loving younger sibling has to keep it a secret.A BRILLIANT book with lots of twists and turns along the way, this is an unpredictable superhero adventure.Even if,like Zack, you have never read a comic in your life I am sure you will enjoy it just as much as I did.

Hattie gave My Brother is a Superhero 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Gorilla Dawn by Gill Lewis.

Amreet from Wigton Moor Primary School:

I really enjoyed this book. It was quite dramatic with a bit of comedy. The author sometimes tried make bits funny but he couldn't and ruined bits of the book. You could guess what was going to happen next. It drew me in with the funny sentence on the cover and also the yellow pages. I would recommend this book to people who are keen on superheroes and comics. As I'm not that keen on them, some bits of the book didn't make sense. Overall it was a really good book.

I found this book really funny because at the start Luke always got the aliens name wrong until the end he finally got it right. His name was Zorbon The Decider. Who could possibly get it wrong? At the end it really got exiting for me because a girl called Lara Lee got superpowers because Zorbon came back but Luke needed a WEE AGAIN!!!! Come on Luke. Zack, who got superpowers, has a crush on this girl called Cara Lee, Lara's sister but she has already got a boyfriend called Matthias. He's got a beard but Luke thinks his beard is like a Vikings. This book is really good for younger children. I would say that this book is packed full with absolutely amazing things for children that like superheroes.

The book is fun and exciting. It starts with "I need a wee" and ends with "I think I have super powers".

A boy called Zack and his brother Luke, with a girl called Lara set out to save 2 universes with Zacks superpowers that he was given by Zorbon the Decider. Zack doesn't really want to be a superhero and doesn't like wearing a cape or disguising his identity.

There are some funny bits but it is a bit predictable as well. I would recommend this book for ages 8-9. But I still enjoyed the book.

Oliver from Pool in Wharfedale C of E Primary School:

The book is about these kids called Luke and Zack who are brothers, and save the world from Nemisis. This takes them on adventures, to fight and save the planet.

What I really like about the book is that it has lots of information about superhero comics, and that it's fun. I liked it when Luke was at the toilet when Zack was getting his super powers. I disliked it because it had lots of characters in the story, which was difficult to follow. I felt sorry for Luke because he didn't have a superhero suit.

I would recommend the book to the children who like superheros and like fun stories.I would recommend this book to children aged 8-11, because it is a long book with some difficult words.

Oliver gave My Brother is a Superhero 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Demolition Dad by Phil Earle.

Robbie from Green Lane Primary Academy:

This book is about a boy called Luke and his brother Zack in there tree house. When Luke needs a wee (and wonders whether to do it from there) as soon as he gets back his brother has superpowers. Luke reads comic books all the time and Zack has never read one, this makes Luke angry but he decides to help his brother to discover what his superpowers are.

My favourite character is Luke because he explains lots about what the superpowers actually do. Actions scenes were written particularly well. The book was funny and made me laugh and made me want to keep reading.

I would recommend the book to younger readers and people who like funny action books

Jamie from Gidersome Primary School:

My brother is a superhero is a hilariously funny novel to read however it has some tragedy in it. Although the front cover makes the book instantly look like a book with a picture on every page it only has about 5 pictures in the whole book. The reason i gave this book 4 stars was because to me it didn't make much sense but it is a comedy and a half! I would recommend this book to you if 1. you like funny books 2. if you don't mind not having many pictures and 3. if you are able to stick to and enjoy a really good book.

Daniel from Westgate Primary School:

My Brother is a Superhero wasn't the best of books as it was predictable and it didn't have very advanced vocabulary.

Luke is outraged to find out that whilst he has been to the toilet, his brother, Zack, has been turned into a Superhero! Zack doesn't even like comics and won't even wear a cape! Zack is told that he has to save not one, but two Universes, from 'Nemesis'. As a huge Superhero fan, Luke decides to help Zack, but with Christopher Talbot (owner of the Crystal Comics shop) also wanting to be a Superhero, things quickly get even more annoying.

My Brother is a Superhero is an easy read, so don't be intimidated by the size of it. I would say that the plot is good and I liked Luke's character, but overall it was only an average book.

I liked this book a lot but I felt a lot of words were extremely difficult for a book for an 11 year-old.I especially liked the very end of the book because if I was Luke I would be very annoyed.my favorate character was probaly Luke because I think he was brave, and I also like their plan to save zack because I thought it was very creative and I also liked their secret weapon to keep the gards back.

Ella from Crossley st primary school:

This book had a great base-line. It had tremendous humour, that I thoroughly enjoyed. The ending of the story was so funny. I felt like I had to rate this story 4/5 because it could have done with a bit more description of the surroundings when they were rescuing Zack. This story is a great example for children who want to enter story competitions. I think 9-12 a good age range.

Madison from Green Lane Primary Academy:

This book was AWESOME! It was about a boy called Luke and his older brother. They were in their tree house when Luke needed a wee. However when he was at the toilet Zack got given superpowers! The front cover of this book was very jazzy and drew me in straight away. Despite not understanding the names of the superpowers, I still really enjoyed it. This book left me thinking what would happen next quite a few times(especially when trying to find out where Zack was being held). I gave this book 4 out of 5 because I couldn't wait to read the next chapter however a few times I didn't understand it. I would recommend this book to people who like comedy and adventures.

Ben gave My Brother is a Superhero 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Mel Foster and the Demon Butler by Julia Golding.

Danielle from GreenLanePrimaryAcademy:

What if you missed out on special powers because you needed a wee?

Zorbon the decider has come to the tree house but his timing isn't quite up to scratch though. Luke is comic book mad; he reads them 24\7 but he isn't the one Zorbon chooses to be the superhero. It's his Brother Zack the guy who loves homework and knows noting about the world of heroes. However when Zack is captured by Nemesis it's Luke's turn to do the saving bit.

I utterly enjoyed this book it's been my favorite book so far. It is so crazy and hilarious there was not one page that didn't make me laugh. Every chapter was a delight and David Solomon should definitely keep on writing.

My favorite part is probably the ending it's such a laugh and it leaves you on a cliffhanger wanting more. If you put together a 2nd book I'd have it down in minutes.

I'd recommend this book to anybody who enjoys superheroes but mostly to people who like a good laugh.

Probably about 7-12 years of age.

Thanks for making fall about with laughter!

Oliver from Otley all saints primary school:

This book was AMAZING! I read this book in two days and it was probably one of the best book I`ve read in ages. The reason I put 4/5 is because I feel it should be a little longer. If you could make a 2nd one I`d read it the minute it came out! It drowned me with laughter it was an outstanding ending and a very well made twist(I won`t mention it just because of spoilers).Luke is so envious that his brother who doesn`t even like comics got superpowers! The villian was very secretive but also very obvious.Overall I would give this a 4.5 if there was a option.Amazing book, make a sequel and keep on writing!
