Who Wrote It?

Liz Flanagan writes for children and young adults. She teaches creative writing, and lives in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, with her husband and two daughters. She used to be Centre Director at the Ted Hughes Arvon Centre, and previously worked in children's book publishing.

What's It About?

On the island of Arcosi, dragons and their riders used to rule the skies. But now they are only legends, found in bedtime stories, on beautiful murals and ancient jewellery. Then servant girl Milla witnesses a murder and finds herself caring for the last four dragon eggs. Forced to keep them secret amidst the growing tensions in the city, she begins to fear that the island’s ruler, Duke Olvar, isn’t all that he seems. But how can Milla and her friends keep the eggs safe when it means endangering everything she’s ever loved? Fiery friendships, forgotten family and the struggle for power collide as Milla’s fight to save the dragons leads her to discover her own hidden past.

Fact File

‘I’ve always loved bookshops, ever since I was a book-obsessed child of nine or so. Once my mum had to do holiday cover for her friend’s bookshop – this was my idea of absolute heaven. I worked my way through the children’s shelves, sitting in a chair in the corner.’

Liz had her YA debut with Eden Summer published in 2016.

I really liked this book.At the start I thought it wouldn't be the book for me but I got half way through and it became a really page turner. It was full of mystery and I was drawn to the front cover. The blurb doesn't tell you much and that is why I always wanted to read to find out what it meant by "The dragons will return on last time.". I think Milla is like me adventurous and out going. If there was ever a second book I think i would buy it. It's a bit expensive but it is worth it you feel like you can never put it down. I haven't read many books likes this so I find it quite interesting. I was curious about the symbol you saw when you got to a new chapter but it was like it was some how related to the story. This book was an explosion of amazing story telling and a superb plot with conflict between the characters which kept you hooked while reading. It focused on building a bond between you and the characters, had an amazing level of description (not too much and not too little)and had plot twists that you didn't expect. Rarely but sometimes the book dropped too many hints so you could you could make a fairly accurate prediction which took away some of the suspense but didn't hurt the book too much. Elspeth from Westgate Primary School:

I absolutely loved this book. The way that it’s written makes you want to read on and on. It always had me guessing what would happen next, but never gave it away; it has been cleverly woven together.Despite the fact I have already read it I would defiantly get it.

Elspeth gave Dragon Daughter 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Infinite Lives of Maisie Day by Christopher Edge.

Ruth from Calverley C of E primary:

I didn't really like this book because it's all build up.the beginning wasn't bad but there wasn't enough action and it all seemed a little bit rushed.though the story was good it didn't seem very well thought out.

Ruth gave Dragon Daughter 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson.

Ava from Calverley C of e school:

I personally didn't really enjoy this book. At the end i liked it but at the beginning it didn't really follow and I got quite confused.

Ava gave Dragon Daughter 3 out of 5 and now plans to read Brightstorm by Vashti Hardy.
