Scared to Death is now one of my favourite books. I just couldnt put it down! Every time I turned a page there was some new action to enjoy. The only thing I would say that wasnt as good is that it was a little predictable in parts, but otherwise it was great. Sometimes the chapters left you on a cliff-hanger and that made me want to read on.
Its been eight years since Pauls brother died in a horrible accident. Well, everyone thought it was an accident. Paul doesnt know it, but down on the streets of London one night, he meets his mysterious brother Redman. As Redmans dark secret begins to unfold, Paul is dropped right in the middle of a world of murder and evil. And when he discovers he might go the same way as Redman, can he learn to control his inner demons?
Also, it wasn't that scary but I don't think that's a bad thing, the plot was still interesting and I would read this book again.

i really enjoyed this book. its title immediatley draws you in and you wont be disappointed. full of mystery, suspense and a a gripping story line. this book wasnt very scary, though some probably found it was, but you didnt really feel that that aspect was essential. the characters were intresting and in general the story was quite fast paced, although the beginning was slightly dragged on. i would recommend this book because it is very unusual, and fascinating.

This is a excellent book with just the right amount of horrer, though it has a lot of mystery in it as well. Sometimes it is a bit boring but the rest of the book makes up for it.

Scared To Death written by Alan Gibbons is about an ordinary London school boy named Paul going about his normal life. Little does he know that his life is going to take a super natural twist as he meets the mysterious and incredibly devious Redman.
Redman has many secrets in which Paul has no idea about. Paul also has secrets in which he would hate to surface once again but could Redman do something to help him get over them or will the trouble just stir and eventually over flow into a mess of deaths and a secret demon seed passed through Pauls family for centuries.
Scared To Death is aimed at teenagers both boys and girls. It shows that things arent always what they seem or in this case a death isnt always what it seems. Full of suspense this brilliant page turning book will capture your imagination making you unable to put the book down and even taking you to the old streets of London where Jack the Ripper still stalks the streets.

This was a good book with just the right amount of horror. Many years after Pauls brother John (nicknamed Redman) dies, Paul meets a suspicious person called Redman. Many people are dying, apparently scared to death. Paul realises Redman is his brother, back from hell to get revenge for Pauls secret killing him. Redman is going to frame Paul for the murders he did. When Paul has to save his girlfriend he must get control of his secret, somehow.

Deep beneath the sour city a secret of a dark hearted stranger emerges and is out for revenge scared to death is a book for ones who like horror it starts when Paul an ordinary boy meets and enigmatic Redman he starts a hell raising and terrifying journey that takes his above and in the subways of London and today back to the cities slums in the realm of jack the ripper and in the horrors and the blood thirsty horror of hells underground. this book is a very interesting and scary it even put hairs on the back of my neck I would rate this book 10/10

Alex from Benton Park
The front cover of this book gives the impression that it is an extreme horror story, but it really isn't that scary. I was infact looking very forward to reading this book but, due to the extremely long beginning, it was quite unpleasant and dull. :(

Scared to death is very good with a great plot, and likeable characters. The only let down is that it didn't really scare me at all, but that didn't bother me. I await the sequel!

I was told before I read this book that it had a really scary plot. Unphased by this, I settled down to read it, as books don't often invoke fear in me. However, this book was actually rather scary, and about halfway through I found it linked to a scary part of historical London. I am not keen on scary books like this and I did stop reading it. But then again, I do still wonder what happens at the end...
The author(Alan Gibbons) has quite a good style, which I would have enjoyed if it wasn't for the actual storyline. Some of the events in the book and other revelations can be sniffed out quite early, whilst others are sprung on you when your back is turned.
Give the book ago. If you are not keen on scary storylines, don't read it at night, read it during the day with a bar of chocolate(or other comforting object).

Darren from Boston Spa School
I thought this book was the best one in all three catergories, it may have been horror (which I'm not really keen on) but it was brilliant. It felt very realistic despite so many unrealistic ideas and plots. It was different and provided something nothing else has. It had suspense, it was thrilling, an almost perfect book.

Groosome , and with a horror genre based on Jack the Rippers story it is adapted to be a very good book.
Sonia gave Scared to Death 5 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Ties.
Sammy from Allerton Grange High School
It is a great book with an interesting and mysterious story. I liked the fact that the story was simple enough to pick up as you went along and didn't leave you confused. It wasn't scary though and got a bit boring. However, it had a great story and plot so it kept me excited and interesting.

i found this book wierd and the book cover made it look like a horror but in the end it was hardly scary.

Zoe from Boston Spa School
This book was so amazingly scary! I loved it. It was fantastically written and each page gives your spine a chilling tingle the characters were fantastically described and I could picture them all very vividly in my head. I loved the general Idea behind the book and therefore cannot wait to read the sequel and find out what happens to Paul. There were times in the book when you were so scared for the characters that you just want to shout at the book in the hoping that they will listen to you.
Zoe gave Scared to Death 5 out of 5.
Laila from City of Leeds High School
Scare to Death is what i describe as a book worth reading it. For me,it doesn't appear to be scary but at least i like the portrayal of the plot and how the characters were describe in the story. It holds some historical facts from the past which blends well to the modern world story.
Laila gave Scared to Death 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Ties.
Jordan from City of Leeds High School
It was a good book, in the sense that it was thrilling, but the plot line made little sense and the setting, storyline and characters were weakly portrayed and unrealistically written.
Jordan gave Scared to Death 1 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Ties.
steven from Temple Moor
*Spoiler Alert* I liked this book because of the moments of terror involved in certain parts of the book, though it was strange that redman got his brother to know people just to kill them. BUt I found it unlikely that it was possible to scare the victems to death and it was also strange that all burn marks wore down within the hour. It had an unexpected ending of the boy running away just to send himself to a surley death to stop the dead king. My favourite part was when paul managed to control his power and unleash it, even by accident.
steven gave Scared to Death 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Ties.
Ellie from Boston Spa School
This book was really gripping and I didnt want to put it down. Some people have described this book as scary but I didnt think it was that bad at all. It leaves you thinking about it all the time and you want to know what happens next. I love John Redman because he is described so well and he is quite creepy. This book has a lot of dramatic irony in it because you know which character is dangerous but Paul doesnt so its almost as if you want to shout at the book in the hope that Paul will listen to you.
I dont thinks its the best on the shortlist but its still a fun book to read.

Roshni from Roundhay
I loved this book!!! The plot was very exciting and it kept up the suspense. I really liked the character John Redman. You might think I am quite freaky and weird but I liked him the best. I liked the way he would never leave Paul alone and strived to torture him with his actions towards Paul's loved ones although he was ruthless and cruel

Bethany from Ossett School & Sixth Form
As the book goes on you do find out that not everything is what it seems when family secrets are unearthed and the brothers are pitted against each other. I liked this book as it is a mixture of horror, crime and the troubles one boy faces as he delves into his past. This book is the first in a set of 3 books all labelled Hell's Assassin. These books are well worth the read and keep your turning the page no matter where you are. Just one thing - don't read it in the dark!
Bethany gave Scared to Death 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Kiss of Death.
Sarah from Ossett School & Sixth Form
Scared to Death had a fascinating story line to it, and it presented a problem with the supposedly ordinary Paul Rector. It was a really good story as it kept you addicted to the plot and the problems Paul faced. The characters were very believable and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels.
Sarah gave Scared to Death 5 out of 5.
Rebecca from Ossett School & Sixth Form College
I think this story is strange because it leads killings with methods that couldn't kill you. I like characters because they keep the story looking slightly realistic, but the rest is sort of unclear. The thing that keeps me wondering is the fact that at the end Ben goes back in time but no one knows how he does it and how he gets there. That will always puzzle me.

Rhiannon from Temple Moor High School
This book was awesome! It was well written, very descriptive, and painted a vivid image in my head! It kept me interested the whole way through, and the opening drew me in straight away! I thought the way that it constantly linked in Jack the ripper was great, as i love that whole historical side! The book not only entertains, but it gives information about The Ripper murders. In my opinion, the only way it could have been better is if there'd been more gore or horror. But i think this book rocks, and i now want to read the sequel!!!!!
Rhiannon gave Scared to Death 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Kiss of Death.
Angelique from Temple Moor
Omg! This book is brilliant! It includes a lot of tension and its really spooky when you read it at night. It's a page - turner and I couldn't put it down! I would definately read it again. In my top ten books. :)

Maddy from Boston Spa School
I found this book quite boring and dull, I had to skip most of the middle section and skipped to the end where it improved greatly, as I think most of the action happened there. I didn't find it particularly well described and I don't think I would really reccomend it.
Maddy gave Scared to Death 2 out of 5.
Zachary from Prince Henrys Grammar School
This book was amazing! The scary parts were well written and made it a gripping read. It also had a story that fitted perfectly, and gave you information about the Ripper that tied historical events with fiction. I loved the way it was modern, fantastical and old fashioned all at the same time. There is not any gore (he scares his victims to death!) but even so the faint hearted should not be reading this! A brilliant book to read in the dday but it can get scary if you read it at night. I'm looking forward to the sequal which should be coming out this year. Strongly reccomend this to any horror loving readers!
Zachary gave Scared to Death 5 out of 5.
Jasmine from Boston Spa School
I don't think I should have ever doubted this book it was AMAZING!The plot was great as it was based on the historically proclaimed serial killer Jack the Ripper which made it all the more fasinating to read.Although some parts can be slightly scary at times I wouldn't recommend reading it before bed if you are squeamish.Brilliantly written, has you on the end of your seat with horror as the gruesome truth is unveiled along a perfect plot. The characters in this book make it all the more twisted and you become very affraid of certain ones as the story progresses. You watch an average kid find out the terrible truth about himself and his terrifying past.Really good book to read and I recommend it to all to read.
Jasmine gave Scared to Death 5 out of 5 and now plans to read The Kiss of Death.
gheorghe from Boston Spa school
This book was fast paced, brilliantly written, and I litterally couldn't put it down; I walked aorund the hosue reading it, because it hooks you from the very first paragraph, in a way that zooms through a story in a way that is understandable, but keeps you thirlled!
gheorghe gave Scared to Death 4 out of 5 and now plans to read Blood Ties.
MJ from Boston Spa High School
AT first I thought this book would be like most of the other horror/ detctive stories I've read with fast action but with little left to the imagination... I was wrong this book was better! The story takes you to a time that no one ever thought we could go back to and the historical facts give the story strong believe ability. I thought that the ending left you on a cliff hanger which makes the reader want to find out what happens next to the characters. This book is a real page turner and makes you think... the only dissapointing thing is that if you get to scared you cant skip those bits or cover your eyes! BE WARNED!
MJ gave Scared to Death 4 out of 5.
Will from Allerton Grange High School
It was really boring and i didn't find anything much interesting in it. It had a few good aprts to it but overall i would say its boring. It didn't make me scared in anyway even at night. If i had a chance to talk to the author i would say make it scarier but good work still for scaring others :) .
Will gave Scared to Death 2 out of 5 and now plans to read The Kiss of Death.
Jess from Allerton Grange
It was really good but The Declaration was better. It kept me reading and had a good balance of suspension. I could have been better but had a really interesting link to Jack The Ripper which was fascinating but could have been more gory.It was brilliant but not quite good enough to get my vote. I would definetly suggest this book to people but they would have not to be squeamish over gory details.

I think this book is questionable. I didn't understand the storyline clearly. I did enjoy the book though. The book is by Alan Gibbons and he is a good author apart from 1 particular book which isn't his best.

This book is gripping and exciting to read, and it is a very gripping story. I think that it could be scary for younger people reading this book but personally I don't think that it was too scary. I don't think that it is as good as some of the other books, but it is still an exciting story.
